When to Aerate Your Lawn (And Why It Matters)

If your lawn feels hard underfoot, water runs off instead of soaking in, or grass looks thin despite fertilizing — your soil may be compacted. The solution? Core aeration.

What Is Core Aeration?

Core aeration involves pulling small plugs of soil (about 2–3 inches deep) from your lawn using a specialized machine. This relieves soil compaction and allows air, water, and nutrients to reach the grassroots.

Signs Your Lawn Needs Aeration

  • Heavy foot traffic or vehicle use on the lawn
  • Soil feels hard and compacted
  • Water puddles or runs off instead of soaking in
  • Thatch layer thicker than 1/2 inch
  • Grass looks thin or weak despite proper fertilizing and watering
  • Lawn was established as part of new construction (soil is often compacted)

When to Aerate

Timing depends on your grass type:

Cool-season grasses (Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, ryegrass):

  • Best time: Early fall (September–October)
  • Secondary: Early spring

Warm-season grasses (Bermuda, Zoysia, St. Augustine):

  • Best time: Late spring to early summer (May–June)
  • Avoid fall aeration — the grass is going dormant

How to Aerate

  1. Water the lawn 1–2 days before aerating. Soil should be moist but not muddy.
  2. Mark sprinkler heads and underground lines to avoid damage.
  3. Run the aerator in two passes — the second pass perpendicular to the first for thorough coverage.
  4. Leave the plugs on the lawn — they'll break down and return nutrients to the soil within 1–2 weeks.
  5. Follow up with overseeding and fertilizer while the soil is open.

Aeration + Overseeding = Maximum Impact

Aerating right before overseeding gives new seed direct contact with soil and excellent germination conditions. This combination is the single most effective lawn improvement you can make.

How Often Should You Aerate?

  • High-traffic lawns: Once per year.
  • Average lawns: Every 1–2 years.
  • Sandy, well-drained soil: Every 2–3 years.
