Orlando Fall Lawn Care: What Your Yard Needs in October and November

Fall Is Not the Off Season in Orlando

Up north, fall means putting the mower away. In Orlando, your lawn barely notices the season change. Central Florida lawns stay green and keep growing well into November, and the work you do right now — October and November — determines how your yard looks next spring.

Here's what Orlando lawns need this fall.

1. The Fall Feeding Window (This Is the Big One)

Orange, Seminole, and Osceola counties lift the summer fertilizer blackout on October 1, which makes fall the most important fertilization month of the Central Florida year. A potassium-forward, slow-release application in October or November:

  • Hardens off St. Augustine for the cooler months
  • Feeds root growth while top growth slows
  • Sets up a faster, greener spring green-up

Use a slow-release, low-nitrogen formula and skip the Weed & Feed products unless you've positively identified a weed problem.

2. Watch for Large Patch Fungus

Fall's cooler nights and lingering moisture are exactly when large patch (brown patch) fungus activates on St. Augustine lawns. It shows up as circular yellow-brown rings, often in shadier or wetter parts of the yard.

Your prevention is cultural: back off irrigation as the afternoon storms end, avoid nitrogen-heavy feeding late in fall, and don't let thatch build up. If a ring shows up, treat it promptly because it will keep spreading through winter.

3. Adjust Your Irrigation Down

Rainy season tapers off through October, but Central Florida rarely goes fully dry before December. Drop from your rainy-season routine to the two-day-per-week restriction, and let the lawn tell you when it's thirsty: leaf blades folding lengthwise and footprints that linger mean it's time to water.

If your controller has a rain sensor, verify it's actually working. If it has a seasonal adjust feature, use it.

4. Keep Mowing, But Raise the Height

Your Orlando lawn needs mowing every 7 to 10 days through October and every 10 to 14 days into November. As growth slows:

  • Raise St. Augustine to 4 inches going into winter. A slightly taller canopy insulates the growing points and shades out winter weeds
  • Keep mowing until growth genuinely stops, usually around late November here
  • Never scalp the lawn in fall, no matter how tempting the end-of-season cleanup feels

5. Stay Ahead of the Leaf Drop

Orlando's leaf season is inverted from the north. Live oaks drop old leaves in early spring, but laurel oaks, maples, and elms color up and drop through late fall and winter. Either way, leaves left on St. Augustine for more than a couple of weeks smother the turf and hold moisture against the leaf blades, which feeds fungus.

Blow or mulch light leaf fall into the turf (it's free fertilizer), but do a real cleanup once the volume builds. Beds matter too — oak leaves acidify and mat down in landscape beds.

6. Put Down Pre-Emergent for Winter Weeds

Late November is the window to stop winter weeds before they start. A pre-emergent application in mid-to-late November prevents the annual bluegrass, chickweed, and henbit that otherwise show up in Orlando lawns by January. Skip it if you plan to overseed anything, and note that pre-emergents also block desirable seed, so don't combine them with any sod repair.

7. Book the Other Fall Projects Now

Fall is also the best time in Orlando for:

  • Pressure washing — the green algae from humid summer is easiest to remove while temperatures are mild
  • Mulch refresh — a 2 to 3 inch layer now insulates plant roots and looks sharp for the holidays
  • Gutter cleaning — oak tassel and leaf season is starting, and clogged gutters heading into Florida's dry winter wind season cause problems later

The Takeaway

Fall in Orlando is a working season, not a resting one. Feed after the blackout lifts, watch for fungus, dial back the water, keep mowing high, and stay ahead of the leaves. Do those five things and your lawn will come out of winter stronger than it went in.
