Houston Lawn Care: A Year-Round Job in a Tough Climate

Houston lawns are beautiful, but the Gulf Coast climate makes them a serious undertaking. Humid summers that regularly hit the mid-90s, sudden downpours, heavy clay soil, and a long growing season mean your yard never really takes a month off.

This guide covers what Houston homeowners need to know to keep their lawns healthy year-round: the right grass, the right watering, the right mowing schedule, and the seasonal work that matters most here.

Best Grass Types for Houston Lawns

Choosing the right grass is the single biggest factor in how easy (or hard) your lawn is to maintain. In Houston, the winners are:

1. St. Augustine

The most common lawn grass in Houston, and for good reason. It's shade-tolerant, grows aggressively through Houston's long summers, and fills in bare spots quickly. It needs regular mowing and consistent water, and it's prone to chinch bugs and brown patch fungus.

2. Bermuda

Dense, drought-tolerant, and sun-loving. Bermuda handles Houston's heat beautifully but needs full sun, frequent mowing, and regular fertilization to look its best. A favorite for large, open yards.

3. Zoysia

The premium option. Zoysia is soft underfoot, dense enough to crowd out weeds, and more drought-tolerant than St. Augustine. It's slower to establish and costs more, but rewards you with a carpet-like lawn.

4. Palmetto & Other Improved St. Augustines

Newer St. Augustine varieties offer better shade performance and disease resistance than older common types.

Avoid fescue and bluegrass. These cool-season grasses from northern states simply can't survive a Houston summer. If your lawn came with them, expect a full re-sod eventually.

Watering Your Houston Lawn the Right Way

The most common mistake Houston homeowners make is watering too often, and too shallow.

  • Water deeply, not daily. One inch of water, once or twice a week during growing season, beats a little sprinkle every night.
  • Water early morning. Before 9 AM. Evening watering in Houston's humidity invites brown patch fungus and other disease.
  • Let the weather do some work. Houston averages 50+ inches of rain per year. Your irrigation is a supplement, not the main event. Turn controllers down during rainy stretches.
  • Watch for drought stress. St. Augustine tells you when it's thirsty: blades fold in half lengthwise and footprints stay visible.

Mowing Schedule for Houston

Because Houston's growing season stretches roughly from March through November, plan on:

  • Weekly mowing from April through September for St. Augustine and Bermuda
  • Every 10–14 days in the shoulder months of March, October, and November
  • Never removing more than one-third of the blade in a single cut. Scalping stresses turf and invites weeds
  • St. Augustine at 3–4 inches, Bermuda at 1–1.5 inches. Taller St. Augustine shades out weeds and survives heat better

Keep your mower blades sharp. Dull blades tear grass instead of cutting it, leaving brown tips that invite disease in Houston's humid air.

Fertilizing Gulf Coast Lawns

Houston's long season means more feedings than northern lawns:

  • Early spring (late March): Balanced fertilizer as green-up begins
  • Late spring / early summer: Slow-release nitrogen to carry through the heat
  • Fall (September–October): Potassium-rich blend to harden the lawn for winter

Skip phosphorus unless a soil test says otherwise; most Houston area soils have plenty. And go easy on total nitrogen on St. Augustine, which is prone to disease when over-fed.

Pests and Problems Specific to Houston

  • Chinch bugs thrive in hot, dry St. Augustine lawns, showing up as yellowing patches along sunny driveways and sidewalks in July and August.
  • Brown patch fungus appears in fall and spring during warm, wet weather as circular brown patches. Overwatering and evening watering make it worse.
  • Fire ants build mounds all year in the Houston area. Treat the mound and broadcast a bait across the yard.
  • Grub worms feed on roots in late summer, leaving turf that peels up like carpet.

Seasonal Lawn Care in Houston

Spring (March–May)

Green-up, pre-emergent weed control, first mows, and irrigation system checks. This is also the best time to lay new sod in Houston.

Summer (June–September)

Weekly mowing, deep watering, chinch bug scouting, and edging. Let lawns rest a touch longer in extreme drought rather than forcing growth.

Fall (October–November)

Leaf removal matters as much here as anywhere; leaves left on St. Augustine smother it. It's also prime time for aeration and overseeding thin Bermuda yards.

Winter (December–February)

Lawns go dormant but don't disappear. A couple of mows may still be needed after warm spells, plus cleanup of storm debris. Gulf Coast winters occasionally need frost protection for tender landscape plants.

Should You Hire a Houston Lawn Care Pro?

A professional service makes sense when:

  • Your schedule doesn't allow weekly attention during the long growing season
  • You'd rather not store, fuel, and maintain equipment
  • Your lawn has problems (disease, thin turf, weeds) you can't diagnose
  • You want consistent, professional-grade results without the work

Local providers who understand Gulf Coast grasses, soil, and pests will get noticeably better results than generic national checklists.
